When a member exercises their privacy rights, the right to access, the right to delete, the response is straightforward. The data is where it should be. The systems can find it, summarise it, and remove it cleanly when required.
Why this was hard before, and why it isn’t now
Privacy has always been a governance discipline, but it has also always been technically hard. Real member data is the data that makes systems behave correctly. Anonymised or synthetic data often doesn’t behave like the real thing, doesn’t exercise the same edge cases, and doesn’t reveal the same defects. The temptation to “just use a copy of production” has been the default in many associations for years.
What’s changed is that anonymisation patterns are now well-developed. A semi-automated process can take a production database, replace personal data with realistic random data, truncate the tables that could be used to derive the original information, remove credit card transaction details, reset email addresses, anonymise notes and free-text fields, and leave a database that still works as a database.
